Coffee and chocolate always make for a good combination. Leverage that with a great location (read: one that targets the right demographic), and it's nothing less than a money spinning venture. Bru World Cafe takes that premise and makes it work, pretty much.

The month-old venture by Hindustan Unilever sits pretty opposite Ramada Plaza at Juhu, looking peaceful enough. Step in, and the green, white and brown decor is inviting, making you want to linger, a must for any cafe. That's until you notice the music. A weird mash up of obscure African, Turkish and what-not instrumental music, it seems like the playlist was a questionable effort at matching the exotic coffee flavours on the menu -- from Ethiopian to French Press. Take our advice, Bru World Cafe: patrons like it simple.

Speaking of the menu, it is interesting to say the least. A step up from the espressos and cappuccinos that most city coffee chains offer, Bru World Cafe makes a sincere effort to step it up -- even serving the Turkish Coffee (Rs 159) in a cute little authentic-looking mug and saucer.

The tea and coffee selections are extensive -- some indecision later, we settled on a Cafe Americano (Rs 119) and a regular cappuccino (Rs 59). Both were no-nonsense, and most importantly, gave us our caffeine fix without trying too hard. Simple, just the way we like it. Though the Passionfruit Iced Tea (Rs 89) was a bit of a letdown because of its synthetic taste.u00a0

Hungry after your cuppa? The cafe has an impressive array of eats too. We picked a Smoked Chicken Barbeque Sandwich (Rs 109), a Chicken Nizami Roll (Rs 99), a Tiramisu (Rs 109), a Chocolate Mousse (Rs 79) and a Chicken and Mushroom pie (Rs 69).

The sandwich was a real winner, surprisingly fresh and moist for a display item at a coffee shop and not as dry as grilled sandwiches at such outlets usually are. Recommended. The Nizami Roll wasn't as great, but still did admirably by coffee shop standards -- spiced and well flavoured. The Chocolate Mousse and Tiramisu were both average -- but we must mention that they scored a few extra points because they weren't excessively sweet like desserts at most outlets are.

It's the little things that make Bru World Cafe worth a visit though -- polite, well informed waiters, prompt service, and a quaint selection of Asterix and Obelix comics sitting alongside LPs, interesting books, and even headsets that you can use. Pleasant and simple, you'll enjoy your time here.
