Soul food for the Maharashtrian

If you crave for authentic Maharashtrian food, Borivali's Girgaon Katta is where you should head. Focus on the food and you won't regret the experience

When we stepped into Borivali's newest Maharashtrian eating joint, we made a mental note to abandon our applied rating criteria for this eatery. Simply put, it fails to meet them. The place is dimly lit, poorly ventilated and stuffy with a few tables that made us stretch our imagination to believe we were in a comfortable setting. In fact, the limited space inside ensures that the phrase 'rubbing shoulders', holds true here.

Staring at the yellow laminated menu card placed in front of us, we tried hard to pep ourselves about the local cuisine that was Girgaon Katta's USP. Sons of the soil will feel right at home here because the menu is only in Marathi. The crowd ranges from families to senior citizens. The younger crowd are bound to give it a miss because of the less-than-inviting interiors and overall vibe.

Food matters
When it comes to the food, thankfully, the restaurant does not disappoint. The Kothimbir Vade (Rs 28) were crispy and oily and complimented the Kokum juice (Rs 15), which was refreshing. The glass of Piyush (Rs 22) was strictly okayu00a0-- we have had better. The Thalipeeth (Rs 30) was smothered with butter to give this typical Maharashtrian snack a rich, delicious flavour; it tasted good. The waiter was quick with the order, and had to be considering we barely made it in time before their strange closing hours -- Girgaon Katta shuts at 9 pm sharp. The owners explained that it was partially operational and it would take at least a month for them to work at full capacity.

Apart from a wall mural illustration that depicts life in a typical Mumbai chawl, we didn't find any other Girgaon connect to this place. The mural was the lone bright spot that prepped up the ambience of its otherwise uninspiring interiors. Creativity was lacking in its menu and that's where Girgaon Katta lost points. It may not be an outright crowd puller but if you relish your fix of authentic fare, this might just be the place to call home, at very affordable prices too.
