His wife, Dr Saryu Doshi, a noted art historian, shared her husband’s interests. During the late 60s and early 70s many play readings and post-show parties were held at their home.
To celebrate Doshi’s passion for theatre, an annual, five-day theatre festival titled the Annual Vinod Doshi Memorial Theatre Festival, was started four years ago.
The festival, currently in its fifth year, will showcase plays such as Piya Beharupiya, Adhe Adhure, Maro Piyu Gayo Rangoon, Gasha and Uney Purey Shaharek in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati.
Director Irawati Karnik, whose play Gasha is part of the festival, says, “The event is a great platform and the audience that come here are mature enough to understand the play.
The team for the play is diverse and the members will be coming from all over India. This is a reputed platform and I feel it gives a special focus on regional theatre.”
Atul Kumar, director of Piya Beharupiya, which is inspired by Shakespearean play Twelfth Night admits that he is expecting a great response. “We are happy to be a part of the memorial festival. This event is a way to showcase the latest talent in Hindi theatre, for which we are grateful,” he states.
Shakespeare’s play All’s Well That Ends Well will also be adapted for the stage through the play Maro Piyu Gayo Rangoon directed by Sunil Shanbag.
