Imagine walking through a house, where practically everything has an eco-friendly stamp. The house, made from recycled tiles, eco-friendly paints and cement, and low energy consuming appliances is a walk-in model on display at an exhibition called Krishi Dhan. The Energy & Research Institute (TERI) headed by Nobel Laureate Dr RK Pachauri, has organised this exhibition. It is an initiative towards sustainable development with an intention to introduce eco-friendly and energy efficient concepts and practices to ensure sustainability across sectors.
The central theme of Krishi Dhan is Green-to-Evergreen. "Over 60 exhibitors have participated in this initiative including a few multinational companies," says Anjali Paranjape, head, western region, TERI. Apart from the eco-friendly model, Krishi Dhan has exhibits demonstrating green technology including a bio-gassifier, a hybrid renewable energy system and a thermal power plant gassifier.
See fabulous examples of agri-technology and energy-efficient products including BEE star labelled efficient artificial lights, air-conditioners, solar pumps and energy efficient purifiers. Drop by stalls promoting agro-tourism to sign up for a slice of rural living. "The idea behind such an initiative is to inspire green ways of living, motivate the youth and promote use of renewable products and energy," says Paranjape. There's also a stall for the youth which gives information about courses related to environment and sustainable development available in different universities, with the hope of encouraging youngsters to take it up as a career.

Three kids aged 7, 8 and 10 will cover 100 kms on skates to spread the message of peace and harmony on Maharshtra Day. The Kalingastone Skatathon has been organised by Roll Models Skaters and Bubble and the three kids Drishika Gala, Mudit Kapoor and Hersh Saroday have been trained by skating coach and Guinness record holder Rishi Sarode. They will skate from Panvel to the Gateway of India on Sunday and will be joined in their journey by 200 kids betweenu00a0 the ages of 12 and 16 years at Wilson College. "I was born and brought up in Mumbai and I wanted to spread the message of peace, especially on this day, with the help of these kids," says Sarode. "Besides, the roads will have less vehicles on a public holiday," he adds.
The three children have trained for nearly a year to be able to skate the distance. They will leave from Panvel at 5.30 am and plan to reach the Gateway by 1 pm. Isn't it too strenuous for kids? Sarode answers, "They have practiced for over a year and have done 100 kms a couple of times before." He hopes they will be joined by as many people as possible at Wilson College, where they should reach by 12 noon. So, if you have a pair of roller skates lying idle at home, this is the time to skate for a cause.

Once in a while, there comes along a musician who elevates the appreciation and status of his instrument to another level altogether. He injects a spark and a touch of genius into the craft. For the tabla, that happened in the form of Ustad Allarakha. The doyen of the Punjab gharana, who would've turned 92 today had he been alive, was a spectacular soloist. To pay homage, his son Fazal Qureshi has conceptualised a show, Mega Drums, that will showcase the diversity of Indian percussion music in combination with other music and dance forms. Alongside Bhavani Shankar (Pakhawaj), Sridhar Parthsarthy (Mridangam), Mukul Dongre (Drums), Vijay Chauhan (Dholki), Kheta Khan (Khartal), Ravi Chary (Sitar) and a Manipuri troupe, Sonu Sangamaheshwaran on the Bass Guitar and Dhruv Ghanekar on the Electric Guitar will also perform. Other treats in store include jazz vocalists Joe and Shefali Alvarez and a Kalaripayattu artiste who will showcase a series of martial art sequences set to percussion instruments including the mridangam and the ghatam.

We love our trivia. There is an inexplicable joy in knowing which country's flag bears the golden Eagle or which bridge replaced the Floating Pontoon Bridge in India. Though most trivia geeks we know of, including ourselves, fail to clear even the preliminary round of the Landmark Quiz, it's always a pleasure to sit in the audience and absorb random trivia about everything under the sun. If you believe your grey cells can prove their worth, head to Bandra for the third edition of the quiz. To be hosted by veteran quizmaster Dr Navin Jayakumar, the quiz is open to all, age and enthusiasm no bar. And just in case you were wondering, it's the Egyptian flag that has the eagle and the Howrah Bridge replaced the Floating Pontoon bridge, in Kolkata.
