Tasher Desh selected for Rome film fest

Tasher Desh, an adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s classic play by the same name has been selected for the seventh Rome International film Festival (RIFF), this year. The film, directed by Kaushik Mukherjee of Gandu fame, will be making its international premiere at the festival that starts from November 9.

The maker claims Tasher Desh to be a trippy adaptation of the original work and will compete with 30 other films from around the world in the Cinema XXI section, which has received works from directors like Elisabetta Sgarbi and Thomas Heise.

“Tagore, undoubtedly, is one of the most talented literary geniuses of all time and adapting one of his works to suit the present-day scenario was a challenge,” says Mukherjee, adding, “While making Tasher Desh my attempt has been to stay as true to Tagore’s original work while presenting it in a modern day format that has become synonymous with my school of cinema.”

The only Indian film to be selected for RIFF, Tasher Desh stars Anubrata Basu, Rituparna Sen and Soumyak Kanti De Biswas. The film also features 10 of the most popular Rabindra Sangeet pieces, rendered by popular international acts such as Asia Dub Foundation (ADF), Susheela Raman among others. Expect the film to hit the theatres in India in the first quarter of 2013.
