The Loft gives a lift to artists

The Loft, an art space in Lower Parel, was initially a part of an old textile mill. For the past four years it has been utilised as an experimental art project space. Now, for a year, starting this month, The Loft will undergo a metamorphosis to become a studio apartment, where artists can stay and work on their artworks. It will also function as a gallery space and the artworks will be exhibited there.

This metamorphosis of The Loft into a studio, residency and a gallery space was possible thanks to Ahmedabad-based architect Anand Patel. “It has been converted into a domestic interior space, an artist residency where they can live and work. It is also an experiment on how artworks will look when these are exhibited in such a domestic setting,” says Anupa Mehta, director, The Loft. This project has been undertaken under the name of The Square Foot Project and will function as a studio apartment from June 2012 to March 2013. To mark the inauguration of the project they are holding an exhibition titled Reconstructing (White)3.

“A Turkish artist will be coming to stay for a month,” reveals Mehta adding that they have been conducting residencies since 2008. The domestic space is pristine white, so that shadows dominate the depth of field. Working space and accommodation has always been a problem in Mumbai, feels Mehta and hence such spaces are needed.
