Pichhwais or textiles handpainted with images of Lord Krishna and his leelas have adorned Vaishnav havelis in Gujarat and Rajasthan from the 16th century. The Pichhwais were originally made using natural colours and threads made of real gold and silver. It took around four months to make a textile.

Bhajans were sung during the making of the auspicious textile, which would form the backdrop to the idol of Srinathji. The art of making Pichhwais is slowly dying. In a bid to raise awareness about the sacred art, Jagdish Parihar, a Rajasthan-based antique dealer has started workshops in Udaipur where he trains artists in nuances of the craft. Around 40 textiles crafted by the artists are currently on display.
The highlight of the exhibition includes the Krishna Kamalam textile that depicts Lord Krishna standing atop a lotus, while fish and turtles swim around. In case you are unfamiliar with the legends, Parihar will be happy to guide you through the collection.
