Bandra's newest bakery, Love Sugar Dough, is a simple, cosy place with a concise menu offering tiramisu, pies, and cakes along with puffs, croissants and sandwiches

For owners of Love Sugar Dough (LSD), the tiny piece of land the bakery stands on symbolises a giant dream come true. Tarannum Aziz, 35, has been a baker for 12 years but she didn't think of owning her own bakery until her niece Sheeba Hasan, 26, came along wielding an MBA degree that beckoned them to become a team. The aunt-niece duo is packing in all their skills at this week-old colourful, calm bakery, unfazed by the bathed-in-blue cupcake store next door, Butterfly Cupcakes. "We have a lot more to offer than just desserts," says Hasan.

The barcode design and funky frames give LSD a retro feel

The menu at LSD is a mix of humble recipes like puffs, croissants, sandwiches, pizza, rolls, along with a dessert assortment of cupcakes, apple pie, cheesecakes and tiramisu. The choices remind you of the time Bandra bakeries such as Hearsch and Andora's were popular. But even if LSD's menu is minimal in innovation or lacking Western breakfast items, its recipes have a simplicity that is endearing and hard to find these days.

After a quick look at the showcase and much mulling over, we placed our order and took a seat in the mezzanine level. Colourful pouffes and a green sofa are set up in front of two tables. The black-and-white, barcode-style striped wallpaper and the funky frames give the place a retro, somewhat Austin Powers-inspired feel to it. Though we were comfortably lazy in our seats, we see LSD becoming far more successful as a takeaway joint. Only because the menu is such ufffd quick bites that are easy to lug around.

We enjoyed the Chicken Puff (Rs 30) and the mushroom and Cheese Puff (Rs 40), as well as the Paneer Roll (Rs 60). The Chicken Biryani (Rs 110), the owners' grandmother's recipe, was the highlight of the experience. The flavours were great, and could easily give some of the better biryani joints in the area a run for their money.

The Italian Melt (Rs 50), their own version of the bruschetta, was passable thanks to a generous flavouring of garlic. But we suggest you avoid the Taco Pizza (Rs 70) that's made of corn dough as the sauce lacks any punch. The Sip A Brownie (Rs 70) was decadent and the Classic Mojito (Rs 60) was also quite refreshing. From the desserts, we tried the Blueberry Cupcake (Rs 50) ufffd it didn't meet the new standards set by the many cupcake entrepreneurs in town, but it was airy and the icing contained actual blueberry chunks, which was a nice touch.

By next week, Poutine (French fries with gravy) and Empanadas (a Mexican dish) will also be introduced to the menu, but first-timers must also try the Blue Cheese Croissant, the Tiramisu and the Cheesecake, Aziz and Hasan tell us.u00a0

The service at LSD is pleasant with everything served with a big-hearted smile and lots of unpretentious love.u00a0
