Happy and gay!

Love isn't all about sex, and we aren't talking bed games here. Here's how to make the most of your queer connections this Valentine's

Straight, gay or bisexual, Valentine's Day is for everyone who's experiencing the most poignant sentimentu00a0love. Enough has been talked about hetero dating; we now get to the task of helping those with alternate inclinations.u00a0

Don't rush

Often, same-sex relationships are nothing but a mode to get over desperation and lack of choice. Don't let that happen to you or a prospect. For a girl to date a girl or guy to see a guy isn't an easy ball game, so handling every step with maturity is a must. Before you fix up the meeting, re-assess your comfort levels, lest the whole thing turns out to be awkward. Try to move up in trust gradually; this facilitates better understanding. But don't fake any emotion, if all you feel is physical. In the latter case, it is best to minimise contact and talk over the phone to build an emotional connect instead. Respect his/her privacy, and keep PDA at bay if the other doesn't appear alright with it. Meeting with mutual friends is also a good idea. If you plan to get up, close and personal at any point, carry protection to avoid any infection. Like any other relationship, you must also ask yourself whether both of you will be able to maintain the passion, romance and security for a life-time.

Don't feel embarrassed

Remember, love knows no boundaries, and moral fanatics have no right to inflict their opinion on anyone. Never feel embarrassed about your sexual preferences. "The LGBT (lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals) community has a right to celebrate the day just as a straight couple would. There is absolutely nothing to feel humiliated or hesitant about," says Anjali Gopalan, founder, Naaz Foundation.u00a0

Nowhere in the history of Valentine's Day is it mentioned that only straight people can celebrate the day. Our scriptures, too, portray same-sex love, which has existed since the very time man, himself, has. It depends on you to decide whether the day holds relevance for you. "Love is not gender driven. Like any other 'socially accepted couple', love is on the cards for me this Valentine's," reveals Rohit Ahuja, an out-of-the-closet homosexual. However, Rohit's belief is not the same as that of India's first gay activist, Ashok Row Kavi. I am totally against Valentine's Day. Why should we follow a model that's made for heterosexuals? We can have a day when we can love everybody," he averred. To each his own, hai na?
