"I remember the first time we organised this show. It was slotted for 10.30 pm, and it was pouring. Moreover, it was an experimental concept. We thought no one would show up," begins Shlok Siddhant, the 19-year-old comic who hosts 3D: A Night of Absurd Comedy, which will be performed this weekend in Chembur.

He continues, "I arrived late too, but when I got there, the place was buzzing. We had managed to get a full house!" Siddhant elaborates on the concept of their stand-up show, sharing that the group, comprising Sagar Mavani, Jerin Ephrem, Karan Chauhan and himself, brings in different styles that enables them to give the audience a brand of humour that is characteristically unique. "Sagar performs dark humour, Jerin does dirty comedy, and Karan is the 'dumb' comic-cum-magician. So, our comedy is a mix of dumb, dark and dirty. Which is why we call it 3D," chuckles Siddhant.

It's dark in here
The members banded together to form this unlikely group after meeting at comedy events in the past. While they would organise and participate in open mics, the idea of a concept show came about only last year. "Nowadays, open mics are so common. Concept shows, on the other hand, are different. And we want to be known for it," says Mavani, who started his comedy career with mainstream comedy, and graduated to the more controversial dark or black humour.

He explains the reason for the transition: "I got tired of cracking jokes about Punjabis and Gujjus. There is only so much fun in stereotyping communities. I used to watch a lot of stand-up online, and I came across comics doing black humour. It was refreshing; I wanted to try it out myself." For his bit during the show, which lasts about 20 minutes, he takes on the role of a dishevelled man who seems detached from reality. This, in a way, makes his absurd jokes more digestible to an audience that is otherwise not mature enough to understand this style of comedy.

Going places
Although this is the fifth such show the boys are doing together, there is always new material to look forward to. "Because our styles are so diverse, we work on our material individually. We try it out at open mics first, and if it works, we perform it as part of 3D," says Siddhant, who was introduced to the stand-up comedy scene when he was only 16.

The young man also plays the part of strategist, and is constantly looking for ways to stand out among the stand-up crowd. One such way is by changing the location of their shows. This time round, they're going to the eastern suburbs. "We'll be heading to Hyderabad as well. The aim is take comedy to places that don't have much of it."
