It may be easy to recall your last conversation where the other person was glued to their screen while you spoke. Our phones communicate more than us today, and bucking the trend needs some extra efforts. "We believe in humanising conversations again," says 27-year-old Kalpak Chavan, business analyst and co-founder of Behiver, a company that organises workshops and social gatherings across the city. The intent here is to facilitate real dialogue between people from diverse backgrounds — all without the intrusion of phones and devices. So far, they have conducted seven such successful events based on themes like depression, theatre and cinema, and even a Zumba workshop, among others. Their upcoming one this Saturday will celebrate Indian authors.

The event will have people with varied tastes discussing their favourite Indian authors and books that inspired or moved them. Each guest will narrate his or her experiences or their own work if they're a budding writer, in a stipulated time of five to seven minutes. From discussing Arundhati Roy's latest work to a narration of the book Twisted Tales by its author Hira Mehta herself, the event will end with a networking session for people to socialise. "It's amazing how our former guests have formed associations, both personal and professional, through such sessions," shares Chavan, adding that the response for such gatherings has only been positive and growing, with over 30 people attending the last event, Let's Talk About Depression.

Chavan recalls, "It struck me while catching up with a colleague over coffee, that it's important to have a platform where people can bond over common subjects. And that's how BeHiver happened."
