The recently concluded Couture Week in the capital city brought back a trend that's been doing the rounds at fashion shows in the West — the one-sleeved top. Designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi took the style up a notch with their showstopper Aditi Rao Hydari wearing a puff one-sleeved top, building on the classic off-shoulder style, as it highlighted the existing sleeve, making it the hero of the outfit.

But they weren't alone. Designers Shyamal and Bhumika gave the trend an Indian avatar with showstopper Kriti Sanon's elaborate lehenga and one-sleeved choli. Off the ramp, Kareena Kapoor Khan gave the classic black powersuit a twist recently by opting for a one-sleeved option. Here's how you can pull off this style without looking out of place.

It's important that you remember to pick a shade that suits your skin, and personality. "Aditi has a really fresh look, so we didn't want a heavy blouse on her," explains Pankaj from the designer duo. And so, they opted for an unembellished nude nougat shade for their one-sleeved organza top, paired with a skirt embellished with metallic cut work in gold with a rose tint, a combination that works well for this style. "Puff sleeves add drama to the outfit and ours was inspired by the Elizabethan style. A top like this could be embellished or plain, depending on where you're wearing it. Also, organza is apt if you want dramatic sleeves as it's voluminous and stays in shape, looking better than a regular fitted sleeve," he adds.

Suit up

Guide

Giving the classic black suit a spin, Bebo's take on the one-sleeved trend is suitable for both, work and leisure. The sleeveless aspect adds an edge to the outfit, especially when combined with double pockets. It's apt for all body types — make sure your arms are toned. Those on the heavier side should avoid this option in bright colours. Skip floral prints. They lend a feminine touch, which takes away from the impact of the outfit.

Dos and don'ts

  • A woman's shoulders, if prominent, are her strong point. Leaving one bare gives the look an elegant appeal, making it apt for formal or festive occasions, and even a night out.
  • If the top is plain, pair it with a pair of embroidered pants or a paneled skirt. You can also team a printed one or a bright-coloured option with denim and wear it to a brunch.
  • Keep the neck bare and don't go over the top with accessories. A choker is your best bet.
  • Heels are a must. Pencil heels look great. With a suit, opt for a closed pointed-toe pair.
