As Mumbai's jazz icon Louiz Banks turns 75, young Indian talent picks their brain to select one song that describes him best
To celebrate the 75th birthday of jazz legend Louiz Banks, eminent Indian musicians Ustad Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, Taufiq Qureshi, Sivamani, Ravi Chary, Rakesh Chaurasia, Gino Banks, Sridhar Parthasarathy, Sanjay Divecha and Sheldon D'Silva will come together for a concert, titled Mile Sur. Ahead of the concert, young musicians share with mid-day a song that suits Banks the best and offer a reason behind the dedication.

I would associate Louiz Banks with one of his own compositions, Esperance, which stands for hope, positive expectations and dreams, something that he is the epitome of. He has never failed to portray these qualities in his life. He gives hope to artistes through his music and always encourages a positive spirit through difficult times. Even the audience is left in a state of esperance [hope] after listening to his music.

I'd dedicate Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar's Wada Karo Nahin Chhodoge Tum Mera Saath to uncle Louiz, who is a living legend of jazz. I want his blessings to always be stay me. I am into fusion music because of him. His command over the genre is amazing. His music was way ahead of its time. It paved the way for the younger generation.

City Life is one of his first Indo-jazz fusion compositions with his fusion group Sangam. I love this song, because the progressive arrangement and the room for improvisation by the musicians involved displays dad's musical range, approach and thinking — always moving forward. It was recorded in the early '80s in Germany.

I love Louiz Banks' composition, Revathi. The song epitomises him. He truly is the godfather of jazz in India. The beauty with which he incorporates traditional Indian ragas into his jazz syncopation can only be thought up by a genius.

A song that brings out uncle Louiz's personality is his composition, Mile Sur Mera Tumhara. His life is as candid as his heart and mindset; there are no boundaries. He has helped bring the world closer through his music and collaborations.
