Every year, the Kolis in Versova (Andheri) village come together for three days to celebrate their love for seafood. And this year, too, they are back with more than 50 stalls, serving fresh home-made dishes at the Vesawa Koliwada Seafood Festival.

Starting today, the three-day festival, that is known for its spicy seafood preparations unique to the Koli community, will take place in the Versova village. “The seafood tastes exactly the way it is prepared in Koli households. One can find lobsters, crabs, pomfrets, prawns and several other fish at the festival,” says Anita Male, member of the Shivkar Mahila Mandal, one of the participants.

The festival also offers the locally-made Rice Chapati Bhakri among other delicacies. “We use only fresh fish (caught in the morning) during the festival, so visitors get an authentic taste during the festival,” she adds.

To maintain the Koli flavours, the festival allows only members of the Koli community to run stalls, and most of the stalls are run by women’s organisations.
