Sugar Rush, a new patisserie at Bandra, serves a wide array of cupcakes in an almost-baroque, fuchsia pink setting. Has it got its recipes right? sunday mid-day does a taste test

Is this new Bandra patisserie worth a visit? Find out

We blink, and blink again. It takes a moment to take in the pink, pink interiors of Sugar Rush, Bandra’s newest patisserie. The bar stools are pink and golden, too, and we hop on to one -- the mirror facing us reads ‘Hottie’. Okay, then. We are here to be indulged but not by vain pursuits but by the cupcakes, desserts and drinks served here. Here’s how it all goes:

Cranberry Cupcake (Rs 60):  Its cranberry icing has got the requisite tartness, we observe, which goes well with the
thank-god-it’s-not-too sweet cake below, but the latter isn’t as fluffy as it promises to be.

Cadbury Chocolate Cupcake (Rs 60): We refuse this one at first — how good can Cadbury chocolate get, anyway? But we pick one when insisted, and are glad. Ask them to warm this one up. When your spoon slides through the copious chocolate icing, deep into the cake to be greeted by molten, Barry Callebaut chocolate filling, you will know if the word ‘lush’ took form, it would be this cupcake.

Oreo Cupcake (Rs 60):  With this, we are brought back to earth, and how ungainly the fall is. The icing is insipid and greasy, and the cake underneath does nothing to redeem it.

Strawberry Cupcake (Rs 60): The cake here is fluffier, and the strawberry icing is close to how we hoped it would be —
natural and rich in taste.

Cinnamon Danish (Rs 90): The cinnamon isn’t overpowering here (which we appreciate) and we gladly allow ourselves to be led on by the danish’s flaky outer rim. However, the insides are rather chewy, so not a very happy ending there.

Hazelnut Cold Coffee (Rs 150): The tall glass of coffee holds a strong, not-too-sweet flavour, with a dash of hazelnut. We’d choose it over the runny, muddy liquids served elsewhere in the city in the guise of coffee.

Virgin Mojito (Rs 150): This one isn’t bad either — a chilling glass of soda flavoured with mint, topped with lime will
make future summers bearable, we say.

Blueberry Cheesecake (Rs 175): This one is larger than most we’ve eaten, and as good as any. The cheesecake is light and fragile, and balanced in taste with the blueberry compote.

Sugar Rush plans to introduce sandwiches and quiches soon, and though we have hits and misses here, we think it
deserves a visit for its variety and the taste of the better bites of cupcakes among the shelves. Just don’t go with a
rose-tinted vision.
