"I'll pay that much only for a giant-sized pizza filled with pepperoni," says our colleague in an office poll we conduct to gauge the interest in the city's most expensive pizza, launched last month at Kode. This one doesn't feature pork nor is it that large. Instead, the eight-piece The Grandeur Artisanal Pizza stars lobster, the prized oscietra caviar, black truffles and gold leaf. "It is unadulterated. The caviar is imported from Russia and Iran while pelati tomatoes for the sauce are from Italy. The ingredient cost equals the pizza cost," explains Saurabh Udinia, executive chef of Massive Restaurants, that runs the eatery.

Piqued, we head there for a bite into this costly pizza. The hand-rolled base is layered with the sauce, butter-poached lobster and a mix of cheeses — manchego, mozzarella and bocconcini. It is baked in the wood-fired oven, and topped with caviar, black truffles, a drizzle of olive oil and finally, slivers of the gold leaf. A medley of flavours play on our taste buds as the thin-crust base gives way to the non-acidic tomato sauce, creamy, stringy cheeses and the soft and buttery lobster, with the black truffles adding an earthy taste.

The midnight-hued oscietra caviar heightens the pizza's pitch as it pops in our mouth; we are momentarily transported to a Mediterranean beach as we savour its saline, fishy flavour. Our main grouse is the gold, which does nothing for this pizza, except for burning a hole in our pockets. Varq is best left for barfis, right?
