There is a unique sense of helplessness involved in travelling to a new country where you don't know the native language. Asking simple questions like, "Could you tell me where this address is?" becomes as difficult as solving an algebraic equation that leaves you as befuddled as the person your question is addressed to.

Overcoming such undesirable situations, at least in a Spanish-speaking country, is the point behind a workshop being held this weekend. "We will start with basic grammar, and guide participants to make application-based use of the language, placing them in role-playing situations where they can mimic what it's like to be in Spain," says Sonam Chheda, who started Spanish Tertulia, the initiative behind this event.

In other words, it's something you might want to sign up for if you don't want to restrict your conversations to, "No hablo Español (I don't know Spanish)," when you travel to that country next.
