As Mumbai’s cycling community resumes midnight trails, an organiser explains why it is a good idea for newbies to sign up

Mumbai has a charm that not many can escape. Along with a cinematic coastline and heritage buildings, the city offers memorable sights at every turn. And while all of this makes for wonderful frames, the experience is more exhilarating at night. With the temperature dropping to a breezy balance, residents are more than enthusiastic to revel in the midnight city lights. Over the years, several sports and activity groups have been conducting interesting itineraries to soak in a different kind of cycling experience.

One such group, Mischief Treks, will commence their midnight rides starting today. Digvijay Rathore, co-organiser and chief cyclist guide on this trip, says that the routes for the cyclists are carefully mapped out. “South Mumbai is a business area, and after a certain point of time at night, there is less traffic on the roads,” he adds.
These nighttime cycling rides come with the promise of scenic views of the city as well as a fun way to stay fit. “We are going to cover the prime spots including Hanging Gardens, Marine Drive and Asiatic Library. It is like a sight-seeing experience for those who would like to see some of Mumbai’s iconic heritage sites. You also get to meet a lot of like-minded people.”
Rathore explains that even women’s safety is considered while deciding the trail map. “The route does not enter areas that are secluded or empty. Starting from Marine Drive, we go past places like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) that are well-lit and patrolled at all hours. We always have a front lead and a back lead.” These events are especially organised to cater to amateurs and inexperienced cyclists. “Even if one is an amateur, they will be able to complete the 24-km trail with ease,” shares Rathore, adding that sufficient breaks are incorporated to ensure everyone can not only take a breather but also soak in the views.
