Even as he brought Jamaican music and the Rasta ideology to mainstream audiences, his style has influenced generations of fans as well as several fashion houses. On his 76th birth anniversary, fashion experts decode Marley’s signature looks.

Colours and stripes
“Stripes in red, yellow, green and black instantly symbolise Bob Marley visually. Wear pieces that have this element to pay homage to him,” says designer Sanjana Bubber.

Add layers
Marley’s style was laidback and comfortable, while also chic, says stylist Sonali Gadia. “He often layered vests, tees and shirts with edgy bomber or sports jackets,” she adds. Bubber says that Marley was partial to flared pants.
“Men today may find this style difficult to pull off. Instead, you can interpret the theme with ripped jeans or track pants, which have the same sense of irreverence,” she points out. He also often wore tribal prints and other subtle designs, says Bubber.
Accessorise your look
No Marley-inspired look can carry its weight without the addition of a woollen or a knit beanie. Bonus points if you pick one in his signature colours, say Bubber. “Beaded necklaces are another great addition. Finish your look with classic sneakers,” she signs off.
