The fascination for fashion inspired by period dramas, which soared to new heights with the TV show Bridgerton, is making a comeback, thanks to a new series inspired by the life of Anne Boleyn, the controversial second wife of Henry VIII. Already swooped up by designers such as Bottega Veneta, Ganni and Molly Goddard for their runway shows, this relatively severe style is a far cry from the fussier pussy bows and floaty ruffles that dominated most of the previous year.

“Square-neck tops often serve as the centrepiece of the outfit. They are versatile and can be incorporated into a variety of aesthetics,” says image consultant Greeshma Thampi. It’s important, however, to bear in mind your face shape when styling square-neck clothing.

“This neckline works well with rounded face shapes, where the length is almost equal to the breadth. In fact, if they choose a slightly deeper square neckline, the cut will help to elongate the neck and make it look slender,” she explains. For oblong faces, where the length is more than the breadth, this neckline helps make the face look more oval, she adds. Avoid wearing very deep necklines or pair it with a chunkier pendant to visually reduce the length of the neck. “Square and rectangular faces aren’t ideal for this neckline as it reinforces the angularity of the face shape. If you do wear a square neck, you can soften the overall look with rounded earrings such as hoops, or with a rounded shorter pendant,” she suggests. People with heart- and diamond-shaped faces can easily sport this neckline. You can use your hair to cover your cheekbones and accentuate the look.

For a more feminine effect, opt for tops with puffed sleeves in pastel colours. Bold colours will add to the severity of the neckline, making for dramatic evening looks. This neckline also looks sharp in business attire. However, don’t wear a very low cut, or wear a scarf to look appropriate for work.
