The Sangvi police, who come under the Pune city police jurisdiction, have arrested Pradipkumar Murgam (28), who hails from Tamil Nadu and is currently residing at Vrundavan Park in Pimpale Saudagar, Pune.

Pradipkumar has been arrested for murdering his father CM Murgam under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. The incident came to light when next-door neighbour, Aniya Swami (52), alerted the police and lodged a complaint.

According to the police, the incident took place at Pradipkumar’s house on Thursday at around 10.30 pm. The complainant noticed the accused weeping near the society’s swimming pool. The deceased used to work as a supervisor in an automobile company in Tamil Nadu, and was due to retire soon.

The inspector in-charge of Sangvi police station, Saifan Mujavar, told mid-day, “The arrested accused has been living in Pimpale Saudagar for the past three years in a rented flat and was working as an automobile engineer in a Hinjewadi-based multinational automobile spare parts company.

A month back, he had got married. On Thursday night, at around 10.30, complainant Swami noticed Pradipkumar weeping near the swimming pool of the society. He was also consuming liquor.” The accused told her that he had been driven to alcohol and cigarettes at a very young age to overcome the trauma that he had been through during his childhood.

“Pradipkumar blamed his father for ruining his life and confessed to the crime. The complainant then alerted us,” said Mujavar. The officer added, “We rushed to the spot and found CM Murgam lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom. His throat had been slit.”

Traumatic childhood
Pradipkumar’s interrogation revealed a sordid saga. When the accused had been a 10-year-old, his father had married another woman. Initially, his mother and stepmother stayed under the same roof. But Pradipkumar’s stepmother apparently made life hell for him.

His father also used to constantly beat him. “As a child, he got no love and affection from his parents due to the constant fights. He held his father responsible for his tragic life,” said the police officer. After obtaining a scholarship, he studied engineering and, thereafter, started working with a Chennai-based automobile company.

A month ago, he married a woman in Pune whom he had met via a mutual friend. “A week back, he came to know that his father had planned to stay with him for a few days in Pune. He then forced his wife to stay at her maternal home in Tamil Nadu. On Wednesday, his father came to Pune.

Pradipkumar spent the day with him. The next day, after dinner, when he noticed that his father was fast sleep, he attacked him and slit his throat with a kitchen knife,” said Mujavar. A post-mortem was performed at the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital at Pimpri yesterday.

The report stated that CM Murgam’s death was due to a slash on his neck and multiple stab wounds on the abdomen. After the autopsy, the body was handed over to the accused’s stepbrother from Tamil Nadu. Pradipkumar was produced before the Pimpri-Chinchwad court in the afternoon yesterday, and remanded to police custody for seven days.
