Cops arrested Shivanand Damodar Kamat, alias Shiva Sawant, alias S Kumar, after receiving information from a chemist at Bombay Hospital. An informant also told the police that he had seen him recently in the area. Accordingly, cops laid a trap and arrested him.
During interrogation, he admitted that between 1994-1998, he exchanged around 25 to 30 kidneys, for which he got Rs 15 to Rs 20 lakh per kidney. He also told the cops that he was the mastermind behind the racket and so he had absconded for the past five years.
ACP Sunil Kavlekar of Azad Maidan division said, “The accused, while hiding in Pune, had started a new business of supplying blood. He used to supply blood to all the hospitals in Pune.”
The accused was initially arrested in 2004 in the case and after jumping bail five years ago, he ran away to Pune and later, Kolhapur, and was hiding there. “A non-bailable warrant (NBW) was issued against him by a court in that case, and he has been arrested for the same,” said Kavlekar.
