Abhinendra Jain, a former classmate of the victim, attacked her when she was sitting with others outside her hostel Sunday afternoon. The girl was staying in Shipra Hostel on the JNU campus.

Police said Jain, in his 20s, tried to strangulate the girl and threatened her. He also molested the girl even as other students watched the attack in horror.

The victim told police that she and Jain were in a relationship. The girl told police that Jain was obsessed with her.

"Jain had told the girl to not to talk to other men. When she did not listen to him, Jain attacked and molested her in full public view," a police officer told IANS.

"Jain was arrested after the girl's complaint," the officer added.

The attack comes within six days after a JNU student calmly walked into a classroom armed with an axe and a pistol and asked a girl he was obsessed with to walk out with him. When she refused, he slashed her and then drank poison.

The student died, while the woman is undergoing treatment in a city hospital. The girl also stayed in the same hostel on the campus.
