According to police, in the incident which took place on the evening of January 14 in Block No.20 at Kalyan Puri, two of the five cops suffered serious injuries after they were pelted with stones by locals. A senior police official said a case has been registered and two persons were arrested from the spot in connection with the incident.
"At around 10.10 P.M., a PCR call was received that some people were playing loud music in the area. After the call, assistant sub-inspector Sandeep Kumar, head constables Manbir Singh and Jitender Singh and constables Kirolimal, Lokender and Ashok reached the spot," he said.
Once there, they cited the Supreme Court order against playing of loud music after 10 P.M. in Delhi and asked the people at the party to turn off the music. Thereafter, people at the party initially turned off the music following which the police team left the spot but, after around 15 minutes, calls were received that they had again started playing music loudly.
"After reaching the spot, the personnel again asked them to not play loud music, but one of the accused, Jaswant Singh, who was in an inebriated condition, started misbehaving with police," the officer said. Jaswant also slapped one of the police personnel, the officer added.
Jaswant's friends then joined in and they started pelting stones at the cops, he said, adding that nearly 50 police personnel were rushed to the spot to control the situation. Police said that the five cops who were injured in the incident were taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where they are undergoing treatment.
"Two cops have suffered grievous head injuries and their condition is stated to be critical," the officer said, adding that, "After lodging the case, two persons, Sunny and Jaswant, have been arrested and teams have been formed to nab the absconding accused."
A policeman was shot dead by liquor smugglers here on January 12 night when he tried to nab them. Sixteen Delhi Police personnel were killed in the past year on duty -the highest number in a decade.
