In a shocking incident, a mentally challenged person allegedly raped a six-year-old girl inside a temple at Jogeshwari last week. Cops say, the accused took the girl inside the temple and sexually assaulted her. The police are waiting for the medical report of the girl to ascertain rape. Meanwhile, the accused has been arrested and remanded in police custody.

According to the police, the accused is 47 years old and mentally challenged. He has two children and lives with his family near the temple. He does not work anywhere and spends his day roaming around in the area. Police say the locals often teased the accused much to his dislike.

Senior inspector Vitthal Damgude of Jogeshwari police station said, “The girl was playing in the afternoon, when the accused took her inside the temple and allegedly raped her. The locals gathered and he was thrashed before being handed over to police.

We have registered a case under section 376 of IPC and The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. We are waiting for the medical reports of both the girl and the accused.” ACP Arun Chavan said, “The accused is often harassed by locals, which may have influenced him to commit the heinous crime.”u00a0
