Hyderabad: In a shocking incident, three people, including two women, were killed and three others injured in an attack by a mentally unbalanced man in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district on Thursday, police said.

The incident occured at Korukonda in the district.

The dead include a woman local elected representative.

According to police, the man identified as Anand Kumar, 35, indiscriminately attacked people with an iron rod.

He first attacked his sister-in-law Vijayalakshmi, 38, who died on the spot due to the severe head injury she sustained, then A G. Nagabhushanam who had tried to control him. He also died due to excessive bleeding.

The attacker's third victim was a local elected representative. Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency member Kandavalli Kumari came under attack when she tried to stop him. She sustained serious head injuries and later succumbed at a hospital.

Three others were also injured in the attack before police overpowered him.

A daily wager, Anand had apparently lost his mental balance. Police said they were investigating.

This came close on the heels of a similar incident in Telangana, where a techie, armed with a sword, ran amok injuring his parents and 22 others on Tuesday.

Police had to open fire to disarm the youth, who later died at the hospital.

The techie was in depression after failing in civil service exam.
