Almost two years after a person from Uday Pathak's gang fired at his shop, a Malad-based businessman received a letter seeking Rs 1 crore from the history-sheeter. The police said the letter was sent by speed post in the name of Pathak who is facing multiple cases, including the murder of four men in June 2011, and is in jail.

The complainant, Babulal Dhoodhchand Jain, 53, was at his shop on Thursday when he received the letter in his son Vikas's name. The envelope had the names of Pathak and two other gang members on it. Jain, in his statement, said that the letter began with the words 'Jai Mata Di' and further said Uday Pathak and his gang wish him a Happy New year.
The threat in the letter
The letter written by Pathak said he thought Jain would come to meet him, but he didnt. It said this time the bullet will enter his head straight, and added that he was posting the letter and the next time he would send a bullet.
"Jain approached us and registered a complaint against Pathak and the other two alleged members of his gang, Rahul Mantri and Vicky Pise. We have registered a case of extortion and are conducting an investigation," said an officer from the Kurar police station.
The previous case
Pathak is facing multiple cases, including the murder of four men in June 2011, after their partially charred, naked bodies were found in Kurar in North Mumbai. In February 2020, a member of the Pathak gang had fired at Jain's shop. The police had found a chit then at Jain's shop with the gang’s name on it (Uday Pathak Rahul Mantri and Vicky Pise - Pathak gang) and the demand of Rs 1 crore and a death threat.
This was similar to the modus operandi that Pathak used in three extortion cases registered against him since he was put behind the bars in 2011. Before that, he had been booked for 12 major offenses. The police are tracing the details of the letter and are looking for the CCTV footage to identify the person who posted the letter.
"The letter has been sent with the intention of framing Pathak and his gang in some conspiracy. We will investigate if Pathak really sent it with the intention of extortion," said another police officer.
