A robber who posed as a customer and stole a jewellery box from a shop in Charkop few weeks ago and his accomplice with whom he escaped on a bike, were arrested on Wednesday night.

The accused were identified as Ravikumar Singh, 31 and Shyam Gujjar, 23. Both were picked up from Malvani church locality, said Charkop police.

On February 4, one of the accused entered Padmavati Jewellers at Charkop posing as a customer. He asked the shopkeeper, Chetan Khicha, 47, to show few gold pendants. When Khicha placed the pendant box in front of the customer to choose from, he asked him to show more options. As the shopkeeper turned, the accused grabbed the box containing 18 pendants worth 2.5 lakh and fled from the shop. The robber then hopped on a motorcycle and sped away along with his accomplice.

Interrogation revealed that the bike, used by the accused to escape after committing the crime, was stolen by them from Mira Road area.

It was also found that the accused had stolen two more bikes from Charkop and MHB areas recently.

“Their modus operandi included planning the crime and then stealing bikes to carry out robberies. Gujjar is a mechanic and knows how to start a bike without a key,” said an officer from Charkop police station.

“They abandoned the bikes after the crime. They also removed the bikes’ number plates,” added the officer.

All the ornaments, worth Rs 2.5 lakh, were recovered from their possession.
