Naik was facing charges in connection with the murder of Nita, a former Shiv Sena corporator. She was gunned down by two assailants outside her home on November 13, 2000, allegedly at the insistence of Ashwin, who suspected her of having an affair with her bodyguard, Laxman Ziman.
Naik was disabled after he was shot from a close range by don Arun Gawli's shooter Ravindra Sawant outside the Sessions Court on April 18, 1994. A bullet had pierced his skull and he has been on the wheelchair since then.
Engineer-turned-gangster Ashwin Naik assumed the mantle of the gang after his elder brother Amar was killed in an encounter on August 10, 1996.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria said Naik still faces charges in connection with the murder of a Gawli man at Pune.
He may have to spend some time in prison until the trial in the case is completed.
