19 injured, 1 critical after bus rams into parked tempo on Mum-Pune Expressway

The string of accidents on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway continued yesterday, after a state-run bus from Telangana carrying 17 passengers and two drivers, rammed into a stationary tempo on the Expressway early in the morning.

The tempo was forced to halt on lane one of the Expressway after one of its tyres got punctured.

Unaware of the stationary vehicle on the same lane, the driver of the bus failed in avoiding the collision. The Lonavala (Rural) police is investigating the incident and has registered a case of accident.

The 17 passengers injured in the mishap were given first aid, and the police made alternate arrangements for them to resume their journey to Mumbai.

The two bus drivers have been identified as G Veera Reddy (40) and P Bala Reddy, and the tempo cleaner, Girjesh Ramesh Singh (30), was near the vehicle when the incident took place.

While Veera Reddy is fighting for life in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital in Nigadi, the other two are admitted in the same facility, having sustained fractures and other, minor injuries.

Head constable S C Murugkar of Lonavala (Rural) police, who is investigating the case, said, “The accident took place on Monday around 5.30 am near Malawali village. The bus from Telangana was heading to Mumbai at a high speed on lane one.

The driver was clueless that the tempo had halted on the same lane, which is usually used by fast-moving vehicles. The bus rammed into the tempo and all 17 passengers sustained injuries. The bus drivers and the tempo cleaner are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Nigadi.”
