The Pune rural police have filed a complaint against 19 villagers from two villages for organising a bull race between May 24 and May 29 to mark the 53rd birthday of Shiv Sena MP Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil.

MiD DAY had blown the lid on the race on May 30 in a story titled 'Bull run to mark MP's birthday'.

Eight villagers from Nagapur village and 11 from Pimplegaon, Khadki have been booked under section 11 of the Cruelty to Animals Act. A charge-sheet will be filed soon.

Nyaneshwar Ganore, API of Manchar Police station, said, "Though we had sent a notice and warned them not to hold the race, they still went ahead.

They beat the animals and forced them to run. That is cruelty. Hence, we took action against them."u00a0
