There u00a0is hope the cycling track at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) may serve its original purpose.

For long, motorists had decided to overlook its real function, happily parking on it whenever possible. But the traffic police have finally started hauling up cars that station themselves here, despite parking lots just a few metres away.

Last Friday, when the Kala Nagar traffic police visited the spot, they found the track lined with cars, and many drivers seated in the vehicles, in G Block at BKC, near Trident Hotel.

Seeing that despite warnings, the track continues to be used as a parking space, the cops impounded a few vehicles.u00a0

"We cannot tow away the cars in which drivers are sitting, so we give them a warning," said a constable. But the traffic police did pick up a Maruti Zen and three motorbikes.

"People do not park in the 'pay and park' lots, and instead, occupy the cycling track, thinking no one will pay attention. But we keep a check on the parking," said the constable.

MiD DAY had reported ('Cars can't afford MMRDA's pay & park', July 11) about how the multi-level parking and the 'pay and park' facility made available by the MMRDA were not being used as motorists found them expensive.

Dilip Kawatkar, joint project director, MMRDA, said, "We have already told the estate department to restrain people from parking here.

With the help of traffic officials, we will impose heavy fines and tow away vehicles."
