Will put up posters in local trains and BEST buses to inform you about the high tides days in July and August

As monsoon arrived in Mumbai a bit too late this year, the dangerous days in June, as predicted by the Mumbai Port Trust, have passed, without causing any major damage. However, the civic body is not in a mood to take any chances.

The BMC has decided to put up posters for July and August in local trains and BEST buses to inform Mumbaikars about the high tide days.

"The posters will have information on high tide dates. Besides, it will have information on flood prone areas and contact numbers of disaster control room and local ward officers," said Vilas Vaidya, chief officer of the disaster management cell.

Speaking about the necessity of taking such a step, Vaidya said, "A few years back there wasn't any such need.

However, after the 26/7 deluge it has become necessary for people to be aware."

Cope with rain

According to BMC officials, the city can cope with rain of up to 350 mm on non-high tide days. Also, in case of water logging, the water would recede swiftly in low-lying areas.

But in case, Mumbai gets even 75 mm of rain along with a high tide of more than 4.5 m, there would be prolonged water logging in low-lying areas.u00a0u00a0u00a0

HIGH ALERT

In the month of July, there are six days when the city will witness high tide of more than 4.5 m.

Besides, the height of the tide that will hit Mumbai's coast on July 24 at 2.23 pm would be more than five m and the highest in the past 100 years.
