Mercury is set to rise in the city in the next few days, say weathermen

If Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials are to be believed, the chill in the air will give way to warmer weather soon.

The minimum temperature recorded in Santacruz yesterday was 13.8C and Colaba recorded 18.8C. The maximum temperature in the suburbs was 32.8C whereas in town was 32.2C.

"Temperature will soon return to normal (around 17C) as the northerlies are becoming weak day by day," said R V Sharma, IMD's deputy director, Western Region.

Currently, the minimum temperature is nearly 14C in the city and it is seeing a constant rise.

"Also, the city's mercury levels mainly depend on the weather conditions in northern India. If there is another cold spell in north India, then the temperature might drop down in Mumbai as well.

But as of now, the temperature will increase," Sharma added. In the adjoining northern frontier, however, Pune recorded 8C and Nasik around 7C.

Sharma explained that this mercury dip in these areas was due to the cold wave from Mumbai, which shifts to the northeastern and northern parts of Maharashtra, thus lowering temperatures.

"If the temperature dips down further, the level of fog will increase in the atmosphere in those areas," he said.

Forecast
According to the met department, weather in the next 48 hours will be slightly chilly and the minimum temperature will be around 14 degree with clear skies.
