It was not just the patients who frequented his Mazgaon clinic that the bogus 'police doctor' Ishadur Haffizur Rehman (in pic) (37)u00a0-- who was arrested a fortnight backu00a0-- deceived for the past six years. Investigations have revealed that the Agripada resident, who had produced a fake MBBS certificate to the copsu00a0-- had allegedly hoodwinked his wife as well, leading her to believe that he was a major in the Indian Army, during their courtship.
Acting on information provided by the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Byculla police arrested Rehman at a nakabandi on December 6, after he was caught illegally using a red beacon and logos of the Maharashtra police on his Honda City ('Arrested 'police doc' is a quack', December 14, MiD DAY). They then recovered a walkie-talkie, 14 SIM cards, an unlicensed revolver, 32 cartridges, and two maps of BARC from him.
In course of investigation, police found that Rehman tied the knot with his wife Wahida in April 1998, after the two met and fell in love. During their courtship, Rehman told Wahida that he was working as a major in the Indian Army.
After their marriage, Rehman's activities aroused suspicion with Wahida that he had lied to her about his profession.
She took the help of her cousin to do some private sleuthing. Her cousin even met Rehman, but the latter convinced him of the authenticity of his claim by presenting his ID card, letter pad, cap and uniform.
Cops have revealed that on September 19, 1998, Lashkar police in Pune had held Rehman for claiming that he was an officer on special duty (SD) for the President. While investigating the con job, they had recorded Wahida's statement, where she had confirmed that Rehman had also cheated her.
"Wahida said in her statement to the Lashkar police that Rehman had duped her into believing that he was a major in the Indian Army," said an officer.
Wahida, who is also a doctor, claimed that Rehman has been undergoing treatment for psychological disorders. Rehman was produced at the Mazgaon court, which remanded him to judicial custody till January 3.u00a0
