CBSE results: Girls outshine boys yet again

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the results for the class XII examinations on Monday and according to statistics shared by the board, the total pass percentage stood at 82 per cent (.07 per cent less compared to 2014).

While results of all 10 regions in the country were announced on Monday, state specific information was not made available. Chennai region (which covers Maharashtra) scored an overall pass percentage of 91.14 per cent, second only to Thiruvananthapuram region with a pass percentage of 95.41 per cent.

After many years of not announcing toppers, CBSE officials surprised schools and students this year by announcing the top seven rankers of the country. While Delhi student M Gayatri bagged the first rank with a score of 99.2 per cent, none of the other students hailed from Mumbai/ Maharashtra.

With schools unclear about the toppers in the city, by the end of Monday, mid-day found that Sukrut Rao of DAV High School in Airoli had the highest marks with his score of 98.2 per cent in the science stream. According to data shared by the board, Alice Alva, a student of Don Bosco School in Nerul who appeared for her examinations in the blind category, has managed to score above 90per cent.

Once again this year, girls have done better than boys in the examinations. All over the country, 87.56 per cent girls passed the exam compared to 77.77 per cent boys; in the Chennai region, 92.13 per cent girls passed the exam compared to 90.37 per cent boys.

“Our results validate the work we do. The CBSE results constantly challenge us to push the envelope with Problem Solving Assessment, Open Text-Based Assessment, Value-based questions etc., and we have met the ever-increasing expectations as a school. Our new flipped approach has helped students cope better with these new changes,” said Avnita Bir, principal of R N Podar High School, Santacruz (W).

She added that the overall assessment of the school’s result turned out to be better than last year’s CBSE Class XII results. Most schools witnessed an increase in the number of students scoring over 90 per cent this year and many also stated that they didn’t have a single student scoring below first class (60 per cent) in the examinations.

“Not a single child in my school has scored below 65 per cent and the highest score was 96 per cent. The results have been much better than last year,” said Seema Maindiratta, principal of DAV High School in Kharghar.

She added that even though teachers had complained that the Maths and Physics paper was very tough, the board showed leniency in checking. “Many students were worried about losing marks because of the subjects but were happy to see their scores. Most have done exceptionally well,” she added.
