With an eye clearly on preventing any clashes between party workers at the counting centres, Suprakash Chakravarty, Director General of Police (ACB and Election), has come out with a unique plan to prevent any untoward incident on May 16.

As the counting on the EVMs commences, political party workers will be grouped in different sections at select counting centres.


According to Chakravarty, barricades will be erected around 100m away from the counting centre, and bursting of fire crackers will also not be allowed.




The State Reserve Police Force and staff from the Local Arms unit will assist police stations to maintain a strict vigil. Additional forces will also be on stand-by at counting centres as well.

This force will join the procession rally of the winning party soon after and follow them till their destination. A decision on issuing prohibitory orders and usage of CCTVs near the counting centres will be taken shortly.

Currently, the EVMs from Mumbai South are kept inu00a0 rooms at Ruparel College and Elphinstone College, whereas Mumbai suburban EVMs are stored and counted at NSE Ground, Goregaon and Godrej Ground in Bandra, explained Shekhar Channe, Dy Secretary and Joint Chief Electoral Officer.

The counting process

>u00a0The counting officer will press the yellow result button to start the display. The total number of votes cast in the machine will be displayed followed by the number of votes bagged by each candidate

>u00a0Results of each round will be announced on the public address system, and written on the blackboards displayed outside the counting centres

>u00a0The result of each round will be conveyed to the Election Commission (EC) via internet and each assembly segment will be given a computer with LAN facility to compile the result
