Menstruation is painful, period. While the degrees of pain may vary from woman to woman, it is safe to say that the monthly 'red devil' causes some level of discomfort to everyone - especially on the first day. In view of this, Culture Machine, a Mumbai-based digital media company, introduced a 'First day of Period' (FOP) leave from July for its women employees, and they have now started an online petition to get their message across to the central government.
On July 12, the company's plea received a shot in the arm from Shiv Sena corporator Sheetal Mhatre, who has moved a notice of motion in the BMC for menstrual leave. While several countries employ the policy, here, it has divided women and men alike. Is it considerate to allow such a leave or will it lead to greater discrimination against women at the workplace? This week, mid-day breaks down the 'padding' around menstrual leave.
