Gold smuggling with new modus operandi seized by customs at Mumbai airport

Mumbai: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Mumbai Customs seized gold in four unique cases of gold smuggling on Monday night.


Three of the four passengers, with Indian passports, were intercepted from the same flight.


Anwar Basha Mohammed Kassim, an Indian national arrived by Singapore Airlines flight number SQ-424 from Singapore, was intercepted and resulted in the recovery of four strips of gold weighing four kilogram and valued at Rs 1,04,15,540.


These four gold strips were recovered inside two LED TV's, making it the first ever case with a new modus operandi. These gold strips were cleverly concealed inside the cabinet, pasted on either side of the TV display picture tube.

In the second case, Haresh Nanikram Chandwani, another Indian national who arrived by the same flight, was intercepted and resulted in the recovery of three cut pieces of gold weighing at 594 grams and valued at Rs 15,46,708.

These cut pieces of gold were recovered from the microwave oven in the checked-in baggage and was cleverly concealed inside the oven near the magnet and condenser.

In the third case, Hero Shankarlal Chhabria, also an Indian national from the same flight, was intercepted and resulted in the recovery of three cut pieces of gold weighing at 599 grams and valued at Rs 15,59,727.

In the last case, Mohammed Fawaz Kabadsha, an Indian national, was intercepted. He arrived by Jet Airways flight number 9W-523 from Riyadh and was intercepted which resulted in the recovery of four gold bars of 116.6 grams each, totally weighing at 466.4 grams. The gold was valued at Rs 12,14,452. The seized gold bars were recovered from the pant pockets of the passenger.

"This was the first time that we found all the four passengers with the Indian passport and also having gold in LED," said an AIU official.
