MMRDA has recommended that builder Niranjan Hiranandani should pay the penalty

Hiranandani faces Rs 2,000-crore fine

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has recommended that builder Niranjan Hiranandani should pay a penalty of nearly Rs 2,000 crore for alleged violations in a two-decade-old agreement pertaining to the Powai Area Development Scheme.

According to government sources quoted by the Times of India, MMRDA commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad submitted his report to the state urban development department last week. A division bench of the Bombay high court is currently hearing a clutch of PILs that some citizens have filed against the developer.

When contacted, Hiranandani said, "There's no violation. How can there be any penalty? My construction has not violated a single provision at any time. All construction to date is supported by documents and permissions from the authorities concerned.''
