Demolition of the Lalbaug flyover and repairs on a 100-yr-old sewage pipe at Peddar Road will cause major traffic jams for Mumbaikars
After the long relaxed weekend that most Mumbaikars spent holidaying out of town, the return back to work will be an unnerving experience. Not only will the temperatures be scorching, but the commute to South Mumbai promises to be a mind-numbing exercise.
Beginning today, work on demolishing the 2.4 km Lalbaug flyover and replacing a 100-year-old sewage pipeline at Peddar Road commences simultaneously. Obviously, there will be road diversions and traffic jams the entire week.
Milind Mhaiskar, additional metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA said, "Work on both these roads will be in full swing on these three days (May 5-7)."
On May 3, a major pipeline that supplies water to Kalachowky, Lalbaug and Byculla ruptured near the flyover.
S Korlekar, Hydraulic Engineer, BMC said, "Our men will be there at the spot in case another pipe is damaged."

One stretch of Gamadia Road where replacement work of the 240m sewage pipeline is on is dug up and completely closed for traffic. This 100-year-old pipeline has become rusty and water leakages have increased.
So far BMC has removed about 6-ft of the old pipeline and is expected to complete the work by May 16.

The MMRDA has started demolishing the 38-year-old Lalbaug flyover from midnight.
This Rs 20-crore flyover will be sliced using a diamond chain wire cutting machine. The flyover demolition will continue till May 10, after which road levelling is expected to take another 25 days.
A new four-lane flyover at the cost of Rs 150 crore will be built post the monsoon and is expected to be completed by the end of 2010.
