J Dey murder case to be looked at afresh: Mumbai Police Commissioner

In a significant statement, Mumbai Police Commissioner Ahmed Javed on Thursday assured the Mumbai Press Club that they will 'look afresh' at the sensational murder of mid-day journalist-writer J Dey once underworld kingpin Chhota Rajan is deported to India from Indonesia and brought to Mumbai.

"As per the process of law, everything would be looked afresh. The main accused would be available for trial...all aspects would be examined...nothing would be left for doubt," said Javed, during an interactive session with journalists at the Mumbai Press Club.


"The main culprit would have to go through a legal process and evidence would be gathered to put up a case in the court," he said.

However, after the event, the Police Commissioner clarified that "the J Dey murder case is on trial before the courts. The police cannot reopen the case independently. If the courts however order a reinvestigation, the Mumbai Police as an investigation agency, is duty bound to do so."

Before the formal Q&A session -- after the launch of Zicom Care's Ziman which would be given to all women journalist free of cost which will act as their personal bodyguard at all times -- MPC chairman Gurbir Singh urged the Police Commissioner to look into the long-pending demand of journalists and the MPC for a detailed probe into the J Dey murder case so that the reasons behind the killing are known to the public.

"The MPC has been at the forefront demanding justice and helping out the family of J Dey and since the main accused is being brought to India, the case needs to be reinvestigated," he said.

Jyotirmoy Dey, 56, the editor (investigations) of mid-day was shot dead on June 11, 2011 at Powai in Mumbai at the behest of Chhota Rajan.
