Nearly 500 people protested at the hospital. On Friday, a case was registered against Lahane at the JJ Marg police station, after a sweeper, Naresh Waghela, alleged that he was called a derogatory term by the dean. Speaking to SUNDAY MiD DAY, Khem Chand Solanki, one of the leaders at the strike said, “We are with Naresh and we want the Dean to be removed immediately. Lahane has been absconding since yesterday.”
When contacted, Naresh said he was on a strike since February 13. He added that he has been working as a sweeper since 1994 and that his job is still on temporary basis. When he continued his strike, Dr TP Lahane allegedly used abusive language.
The protest was supported by 500 temporary workers, 200 female nurses and 300 male workers and the slogan of the protest was ‘Dean Hatao ... JJ bachao’.
When contacted, Dr TP Lahane said that he is in Nasik, before disconnecting the call and remaining unavailable. The superintendent of JJ Hospital claimed that he had no idea about Lahane’s whereabouts, while few workers claimed that he has been admitted at Bombay Hospital.
