Smart cities mean the entire area has a wi-fi connection, along with 24x7 surveillance systems, and other facilities (see box).

Mid-day had reported on November 23 that MMRDA planned to convert BKC into a smart city by March 2015. The planning agency believes developing smart cities will not only give better facilities to those coming there, but will also be good business.

A senior MMRDA official said, “We have plans to set up more smart cities in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This move will help in attracting companies, as our smart cities will have all the necessary facilities.”

Some of the important locations for these plans include the Virar-Alibaug multimodal corridor and Wadala.

“The idea of developing smart cities is to attract investors and, at the same time, also aid in development of the area and provide job opportunities to the locals there,” added the official.
