Comprising seven puris, a bhaaji and pickle, the meal will cost only Rs 10.

"We have received instructions from the railway ministry to serve janata khaana on at least two stalls at the stations.

These stalls will sport a notice board stating that the low-cost meal is served there," said R D Sharma, group general manager, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation.

However, railway officials are sceptical about the success of the plan considering the price and the fact that the railway administration has banned cooking at stations.

"The meal is intended for the poor who cannot afford thalis served on long-distance trains and canteens.

However, there is no guarantee that passengers will get fresh food since cooking is not permitted on railway stations.

There will be questions about the quality of food as well since it's priced so low," said a railway
official.
