Thane: A 33-year-old man and his mother were arrested for allegedly harassing the former's wife for dowry in the city, police said today.

In her complaint to police filed yesterday, the victim alleged that her husband Ganesh N Nair, a civil engineer employed with a private firm, and mother-in-law Vijayalaxmi N Nair (57) had been harassing her and demanding dowry since February, assistant police inspector at Kasarwadavali P D Patil said.
According to the complaint, the duo allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh cash and also Rs 30 lakh for purchase of a car, Patil said. The complaint further alleged that the duo also took away jewellery, worth about Rs 28 lakh, given by her parents at the time of her marriage, he said.
The woman also alleged that they withdrew Rs 10,63,061 by using her debit card and thus cheated her, he said. Subsequently, the two were arrested late last night, the official said.
Offences have been registered against them under sections 498(A) (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 rw 34 (cheating) of the IPC, Patil added.
