ALTHOUGHu00a0 election results will be declared only on May 16, Congress candidate Milind Deora has emerged as clear winner as far as spending in Mumbai South constituency is concerned.

Deora officially spent over Rs 7 lakh, leaving behind 19 other candidates. The miser amongst the lot was independent candidate Dnyosho Rashtrapati who spent only a mere Rs 10,500. The figure was officially released on Friday by the city collector.

The constituency had 2809 polling stations for which at least 20,000 people were deployed on election duty. These included police and other poll officials. About 1200 vehicles were hired in the process.

"Central Reserve Police Force, 82 Battalion from J&K were deployed. The collector spend Rs 1.87 crore on polling personnel during the election," said the City Collector Idzes Kundan.

The Indian chief of ABN Amro Bank and independent candidate Meera Sanyal spent around Rs 4.5 lakh, out of which she is yet to make payments of Rs 77,000. Shiv Sena-BJP candidate Mohan Rawale also spent Rs 4.5 lakh on his election campaign.

Surprisingly BSP candidate Mohammed Abubakar Ali Shaikh, who had been active in social service in the run up to Lok Sabha election doled out mere Rs 40,000.

Ironically, with all allegations of illegal spending in elections and a modest cap of Rs 25 lakh, politicians seemed to have spent nothing.
