The mill workers have called off the October 2 protest of stopping the chief minister from garlanding the Gandhi statue in Mumbai after the government invited them for talks.
On August 28, nearly 50,000 mill workers and their family members had marched four kilometres from Rani baug to Azad Maidan giving jitters to the government. Prithviraj Chavan's diplomatic intervention and assurances of solving their housing woes had forced the workers to soften their stand. However, after no development on the housing issue for over a month, the protestors had planned to stop the chief minister from garlanding the Gandhi statue outside Mantralaya on Sunday.
On Saturday, the union changed their plans after Chavan agreed to meet them on October 4 at Vidhan Bhawan. Confirming the news, mill union leader Datta Ishwalkar, said, "Since our plan (to prevent the CM from garlanding the statue) was out in public he (Chavan) immediately set up a meeting on October 4." Meanwhile, Ishwalkar said the protest march from Churchgate to Mantralaya will still take place.
As per union leaders, there are 1.10 lakh mill workers and the government has constructed only 6,900 houses.
