The project includes Goliath crane facility of 300-tonnes, modular workshop, cradle assembly shop and new wet basin, a press release issued here today stated. The consultant for this project is M/s Haskoning Nederland BV, the release said.
"The new wet basin forms the biggest component of the project. "The need for a new basin has been felt for some time, as the existing berthing facilities within the shipyard are limited to one wet basin, which can berth only two-three warships," the release said.
This new wet basin will have a depth of 12-metres from the surface, within independent impounding pumps, which will maintain the level of water.
It will have a gate, which can be opened and closed for movement of vessels to and from the wet basin.
This project caters for future maritime needs of the country and will go a long way towards speeding up processes by modular construction, lifting of larger sections and generating additional berthing space of ships.
The project, scheduled to be completed in 2011, would increae the capacity of the Mazagaon Dock Ltd, thereby enabling the shipyard to meet the future requirements of warships and submarines, the release said.
