More controversy for CCI

Mittal becomes CCI president. Trivedi resigns citing political priorities

BADAL Mittal has taken over as president of the Cricket Club of India (CCI). Mittal, who was serving as vice-president of the Churchgate club, was elected president after Y P Trivedi resigned only a few months into the post. Mittal took over the presidency from January 28 2009.

Trivedi, a Member of Parliament (MP) resigned, "As the elections are coming up and I will be very busy. I would be unable to do justice to the CCI post. In fact, I will be out of town for 20 days in February. If the elections were not coming up, I would have continued as the club president."

Last year, Trivedi and Mittal actually vied against each other for the prestigious post to be the president of the (CCI). At that time, Mittal had won but for mysterious reasons, gave up his claim for presidency and handed over the seat to his rival Trivedi.

The elite CCI member base had been flummoxed by developments and there was a buzz in the club that a, 'compromise formula' had been worked out between Mittal and Trivedi, wherein Trivedi would be president for three months, resign and give the hot seat to Mittal.

While both Mittal and Trivedi denied it at that time, the buzz has certainly come true. Trivedi has resigned in approximately three months with Mittal taking over the prestigious post.

Incidentally, a now ailing Raj Singh Dungarpur had held the CCI president's post for 15 years, becoming synonymous with the cricket club. Now, strange things are happening in the post-Dungarpur era.

What they had said after the CCI elections in September 2008:

I gave the presidency to Y P Trivedi despite winning because he is the person who can bring cricket back to the Brabourne Stadium. He is Sharad Pawar's right hand man. What difference does it make if I am the vice-president or president? As it is, I function virtually like the president of the club.u00a0

What deal are you talking about? I think you are looking for some controversy.
